3 million children died of hunger every year. We cannot save them all. But, we can start by saving one.

CARMELITE CHILDREN HOME @ SICAYAB
My first visit to the orphanage was during the mid week of December 2016. I read that they needed help. I went with the idea of applying the internet technology to make a difference for the orphanage. After all, I am a professional in the areas of electronic business technology.

The orphanage is located in Sicayab, a small town near Dipolog, north-west Mindanao, Philippines. It's history dated back to 1987. It hopes to continue to help the children in Carmelite Home find meaning in life, get an adoption or one day be able to fly on their own.

Carmelite Home has the capacity to house as many as 40 orphans, but the financial constraints faced by the orphanage limit the reality to just 23 orphans.

Even then, it is a struggle to put food on the table. It is well known that 3 million children died of hunger every year. We can't save them all, but you and I can start by saving one at a time. Here in Carmelite, the children are all not exactly orphans, some are taken from very poor families or kids left in the streets to fence for themselves. The children in the home are all from Sicayab and Dipolog.

The orphanage is managed by Sister Eva Ferro (2016), Sister Edely (2018) and Sister MaryJohn (2019). According to Sister Eva, the orphanage survives largely on donations (sometime food, sometime money) from the local residents. They neither get any government funding nor any assistance from any NGOs.

HOME OF HOPE @ Handumanan, Bacolod

My first visit to this children's home was during the mid week of July 2018.The orphanage is located in a rather quiet deserted location in Handumanan, about 20km from the town of Bacolod. It's a resettlement district and the whole district looks very poor. Houses look makeshift. People are lean, shabbily dressed and hungry. Just make me wondered, who are the local donating to Home of Hope? The center of the district is a "hyper-market" (but really its a small, poorly stuffed supermarket by Singapore standards) - its the only commercial spot where you can see some activities and food stalls.

Getting to Home of Hope is a real challenge. No taxi is willing to go all the way from Bacolod. So, I took a taxi to the nearest point to Handumanan, and then continue on trishaw to get to Home of Hope.

Home of Hope has a much bigger compound as compared to Carmelite Home in Sicayab. However, the whole place in a poor state of maintenance -  the boarding house, the indoor & outdoor courtyards, the dining room, the animal enclosures, the overgrown muddy garden. They are in real need for help. The in-charge, m/s Ritche Olivares (who have been with Home of Hope since her young days of 20+), seemed undaunted and was eagerly explained her big plans to improve all these areas. Ritche has started growing their own foods like breeding chicken, ducks, cows, pigs and planting vegetables. I think this is really super tough endeavors. And this food project cannot fail as the home now survives largely on donations from the local residents. Ritche said they get very little support from the government and NGOs.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

Plan-1:
e-Adopt an orphan.
S$60 or US$48 will put food on the table to save one orphan for one month.
Donate S$60 (about 2000 peso) every month on a 6-month or 1 year "bucket" programme. You may curtail your donation anytime, though preferably not within the 1st year. You may transfer/paynow/ paypal your contribution in buckets of 6 (S$360) or 12-month (S$720). For overseas, via paypal is also welcome.
Number of donors supporting this "bucket" e-adopt programme:
